Rich California history throughout the Sonoma Valley

Located just 45 minutes north of San Francisco, Sonoma County is one of California’s top food and wine destinations. The county is home to more than 425 wineries, ranging from small, family-run estates to international wineries. Set amid its rolling hills and valleys, including Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley, the region is home to wilderness areas such as Armstrong Redwoods State Preserve and sandy beaches, many of which frame Bodega Bay.

Sonoma county offers a variety of outdoor adventures where you can hike among towering redwoods, cruise along rugged Pacific coastline, or simply meander through peaceful and inviting towns.

The centerpiece of Sonoma county is the city of Sonoma itself. It’s the home of the Sonoma International Film Festival, a yearly event that honors independent features, documentaries, world cinema, and short films. The 5-day event offers world-class cuisine from local artisans and exceptional wine from Sonoma vintners. Renowned filmmakers, industry leaders, and A-List celebrities partake the festival each year.

Sonoma is a history lover’s dream. It’s home to Mission San Francisco Solano, the last Spanish-Mexican mission built in California. The city also houses Buena Vista Winery, California’s oldest winery, and Gundlach-Bundschu, the state’s oldest, continually operating family winery.

The historic Sonoma Plaza in the center of town is a wonderful remnant of Sonoma’s Mexican colonial past. It’s an eight-acre town square—the largest in California. It’s also the birthplace of the California State Bear Flag, created by Americans rebelling against Mexican rule. Today, however, Sonoma Plaza is lined with charming shops, tasting rooms, and popular restaurants. The plaza is a National Historic Landmark and still serves as the town’s focal point, hosting many community festivals and drawing tourists all year round. From arts and culture, to wine and food, to outdoors and history, Sonoma has something for everyone.
